Salesian Bids Adieu To Its Last Graduates, by Robert Jonason Times Staff Writer.

Cedar Lake- The halls of Salesians Preparatory School officially closed at 4p.m. Saturday. At that time 33 eighth graders filed out of the schools chapel following baccalaureate and commencement exorcises. It was the last official act of the school. The Salesians provincial office in New Rochelle, NY mandated the shutdown due to financial difficulties of both the province and the school. Some onlookers said the occasion was like many of the schools previous graduation ceremonies. But others felt Saturday's ceremony was more low key and solemn. " It is tougher on the parents than it is on us and the boys " Brother Tom Higgs, who has served on the Salesians Staff for nineteen years, said " We've got a place to go ;they don't. A lot of them are left with a void."  " All Salesians staff will be placed in other schools or seminaries; "Parks said "Most are going to stay in Cedar Lake this summer to attend area colleges "he added. The senior class graduation ceremony was held Friday night in the school gymnasium. Parks said "emotions were so thick you could cut them with a knife." The senior class unanimously chose Rev. Fred deCristobal , principal and director, to give the commencement address . In the address deCristobal reminisced about his many years at Salesians. Many Parents in the audience cried during the address Parks said. DeCristobal also gave the farewell address at the eighth grade exercise, telling the boys they were now sufficiently prepared to pursue their education in high school.  Unfortunately, in the minds of many boys and their parents that high school won't be Salesians-Prep.

Uncovered by Mike McDowell. I found a number of articles relating to this property and will summarize them here.

Timeline:
1979 - School Closed
1982 - Bought by Ona Pranckeviciute with plans to create a Good Shepard Home health facility. The plans were ultimately rejected due to Ona running 2 other homes in Chicago that were unlicensed and had been shut down.
1986 - Ona Evicted. Although she obtained needed financing, the company she got the money from didn't like the way it was run and pulled back on additional funds.
9/6/91 - New owners plan on converting the former property to a home for abused children. The Grace Fellowship church will name it "City of Refuge Children’s Home".

Virtually the entire recent history is here:

9/13/200 -  Mancow Muller's discussion of Salesian site property brings curious, cops to  former school property.

10/05/2001 - Spirited plan proposed for Salesian property Spirited plan proposed for Salesian property. Owner hopes to open haunted house on the grounds for Halloween.

10/16/2001 A ghostly venture Special designer hired to transform Salesian Prep into haunted house.

So there it is, boys and girls.  The haunted school has been repaired and was a Halloween Haunted House in 2001. Accounts of those that worked inside the structure's Haunted House reported some strange activity in the basement and possibly a few other areas. More rumors have surfaced of an alleged cover up involving missing minors and inappropriate activity of a priest that once worked there. Some say the priest in question took his own life when the "shit hit the fan." Again, THESE ARE ONLY RUMORS, I have nothing solid to back this up. It is strange though that visitors to the Haunted House continued to ask workers who the guy in the Priest outfit was in the basement. He was doing a great job they were told. The only problem with this was there were no workers dressed as a Priest  .....

In our experience as a group we have never illegally trespassed on any property. Although personally tempted, I never made it out to take a look at this property before the infamous Mancow incident.

Those considering the old "sneaking in and having a peek" should be warned the place is now fenced in with security guards and large nasty dogs.
